Graduate Route Visa
Completed your UK degree? You can stay and work for up to 2 years, no job offer needed. Here's what the Graduate Route visa costs, who qualifies, and the January 2027 deadline you cannot afford to miss.

Which UK universities can you actually afford?
Answer 2 quick questions and we'll match you to UK universities that fit your budget.
Step 1 of 2 — How much can you pay upfront?
Yes — if you have successfully completed a UK degree at a licensed higher education institution, you can apply to stay in the UK and work for up to two years after graduation through the Graduate Route visa. PhD graduates get three years. No job offer is required. No sponsorship needed. You can work in virtually any role, at any skill level, including self-employment.
The Graduate Route is one of the most flexible immigration routes the UK offers, and for Nigerian graduates it represents a genuine opportunity to build UK work experience, establish professional networks, and potentially secure the employer sponsorship that leads to long-term settlement. This guide covers the official eligibility requirements, exact costs, application process, work rights, and the critical deadline change coming in January 2027.
⚠️ Important 2027 deadline: The Graduate Route visa duration is changing. If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, you get 2 years (3 years for PhDs). If you apply on or after 1 January 2027, bachelor's and master's graduates get only 18 months. This change was confirmed by the Home Office in October 2025 and is now law. If your graduation is in 2026, plan your application timeline carefully.
What Is the UK Graduate Route Visa?
The Graduate Route (sometimes called the Post-Study Work visa) is a UK immigration route that allows international students who have completed an eligible degree at a UK higher education institution to remain in the UK to work, look for work, or be self-employed — without needing a job offer or employer sponsorship. It was reintroduced in 2021 (having been abolished in 2012) and has become one of the most used post-study routes for international graduates.
The Graduate Route is a bridging visa. It does not lead directly to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR/settlement). Its purpose is to give you time in the UK to find qualifying employment, gain experience, and transition to a long-term visa route — most commonly the Skilled Worker visa — which does lead toward permanent residency.
How Long Does the Graduate Route Visa Last in 2026?
| Degree Level | Application submitted on or before 31 Dec 2026 | Application submitted on or after 1 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's degree or Master's degree | 2 years | 18 months |
| PhD or other doctoral qualification | 3 years | 3 years (unchanged) |
The visa length is determined by your application date, not your course start date or graduation date. If you complete your degree in mid-2026 but do not apply until January 2027, you will receive only 18 months. For most Nigerian graduates finishing undergraduate or master's degrees in 2026, applying as early as possible after graduation — and certainly before 31 December 2026 — secures the full two-year permission.
The Graduate Route cannot be extended. You can only hold Graduate Route permission once in your lifetime. When it expires, you must either switch to another visa (such as a Skilled Worker visa) or leave the UK.
Who Is Eligible for the UK Graduate Route Visa?
To qualify for the Graduate Route, you must meet all of the following requirements as set out in the UK Immigration Rules:
- Valid Student visa at time of application: You must be in the UK on a current, valid UK Student visa (or Tier 4 General Student visa) when you apply. You cannot apply for the Graduate Route from outside the UK. If your student visa has already expired, you are not eligible.
- Successful course completion: You must have successfully completed an eligible UK bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctoral degree, or other approved qualification. Your university must have notified UKVI of your completion before you can submit your application — this is done automatically by your institution once your results are confirmed.
- Eligible institution: Your university must be a licenced Student sponsor that is also an approved provider of the Graduate Route. The vast majority of UK universities qualify. Your institution's international office can confirm eligibility.
- No absence breach: You must have spent the required amount of time studying in the UK as a student. Excessive absences during your course can affect eligibility.
Wait until your results are officially confirmed and your university's systems have updated. Applying too early — before your institution has notified the Home Office — will result in a refused application. Your International Student Office will usually tell you when you can safely apply.
How Much Does the Graduate Route Visa Cost?
The Graduate Route visa application fee increased on 8 April 2026 as part of the Home Office's across-the-board fee update.
| Fee Component | Amount (GBP) | Approx. Naira* | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Route application fee | £937 | ≈ ₦1,921,000 | Per applicant. Non-refundable once biometrics submitted. |
| Immigration Health Surcharge — 2 years | £2,070 | ≈ ₦4,244,000 | £1,035/year × 2 years. Note: the Graduate visa IHS rate is £1,035/year — higher than the student rate of £776/year. |
| Immigration Health Surcharge — 3 years (PhD) | £3,105 | ≈ ₦6,365,000 | £1,035/year × 3 years. |
| TOTAL — bachelor's/master's (2-year visa) | £3,007 | ≈ ₦6,164,000 | Application fee + 2-year IHS. |
| TOTAL — PhD graduate (3-year visa) | £4,042 | ≈ ₦8,286,000 | Application fee + 3-year IHS. |
*Based on ₦2,050/£1 (indicative NFEM rate, May 2026). Verify the live rate on the day you pay.
No financial evidence required. Unlike the student visa, you do not need to show proof of funds (bank statements held for 28 days) when applying for the Graduate Route. You must be able to support yourself in the UK without recourse to public funds, but the Home Office does not set a specific financial threshold or require bank statements as part of this application.
Priority service is not available for Graduate Route applications. You cannot pay for faster processing. Apply well before your student visa expires to ensure you are not left in a gap.
How to Apply for the Graduate Route Visa — Step by Step
- Complete your degree and wait for official confirmation. Wait until your university has formally confirmed your results and notified UKVI of your course completion. Ask your International Student Office when this has been done — typically a few weeks after results are confirmed. Do not apply before this step is complete.
- Apply online at GOV.UK. Go to gov.uk/graduate-visa and complete the online application. You will need your passport, your UKVI reference (from your student visa), and details of your current student visa permission.
- Pay the application fee and IHS online. Pay the £937 application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (£2,070 for 2 years, or £3,105 for PhD) during the same online session. These fees are required to submit the application.
- Submit biometrics if required. If you enrolled your biometrics for your student visa using the UKVI ID Check app, you can complete the Graduate Route application entirely online from home — no appointment needed. If you cannot use the app (for example, if you have a new passport), you will need to book an in-person appointment at a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) service point. These are located in major UK cities.
- Receive your decision. The Home Office aims to decide Graduate Route applications within 8 weeks, though many straightforward applications are decided considerably faster. Your permission will be granted as an eVisa (digital status). You will receive an email confirmation.
You must apply for the Graduate Route while your student visa is still valid. If your student visa expires before you apply, you lose eligibility entirely. Build in a generous buffer — apply at least 4–6 weeks before your student visa expiry date. While your Graduate Route application is pending, your student visa conditions continue to apply (including work hour limits), unless UKVI has specifically confirmed otherwise.
What Are Your Work Rights on the Graduate Route Visa?
The Graduate Route removes virtually all the restrictions that apply under the student visa:
| Work Right | Student Visa | Graduate Route Visa |
|---|---|---|
| Work for an employer | ✅ Up to 20 hrs/week (term time) | ✅ Full-time, no limit |
| Self-employment / freelancing | ❌ Prohibited | ✅ Permitted |
| Start a business | ❌ Prohibited | ✅ Permitted |
| Fill a permanent vacancy | ❌ Prohibited | ✅ Permitted |
| Work in any sector / skill level | ⚠️ Restrictions apply | ✅ Permitted |
| Professional sports/entertainment | ❌ Prohibited | ✅ Permitted |
| Recourse to public funds (benefits) | ❌ Not permitted | ❌ Still not permitted |
You can work in any job at any level — from entry-level roles to senior professional positions. There is no minimum salary requirement. You can also take multiple jobs simultaneously, work part-time or full-time, and switch roles freely without notifying the Home Office. This flexibility is a significant advantage for building a CV and exploring industries while in the UK.
What Are Your Options After the Graduate Route Visa?
The Graduate Route cannot be extended and does not lead directly to settlement. When it expires, your main options are:
1. Skilled Worker Visa (most common route)
If you secure a qualifying job offer from a UK employer with a valid sponsor licence, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa. This is the most common long-term route for Nigerian graduates who want to remain in the UK. Requirements from 2026 include:
- A job offer at RQF Level 6 or above (degree level)
- Minimum salary of £38,700 per year (or the going rate for the specific occupation — whichever is higher)
- English language at CEFR B2 (IELTS 5.5–6.0 depending on test)
- A valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer
After 5 years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — though the government is reforming this timeline (see below). After ILR, you can apply for British citizenship after a further 12 months.
2. High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa
If you graduated from one of the top-ranked universities on the UK government's Global Universities List within the last five years, you may be eligible for the HPI visa — a 2-year (or 3-year for PhDs) work visa that does not require a job offer. Note: a cap of 8,000 applications per year was introduced in November 2025. Check current availability.
3. Global Talent Visa
For graduates who can demonstrate exceptional talent or promise in academia, research, digital technology, arts, or design, the Global Talent visa offers an endorsement-based route to long-term residency. Highly competitive, but leads to settlement faster than most routes.
4. Study Again (Return to Student Visa)
If you want to pursue a higher degree (e.g., move from a bachelor's to a master's, or from a master's to a PhD), you can switch back to a Student visa from within the UK if you hold a new CAS from a licensed institution.
Settlement Timeline — What Nigerian Graduates Need to Know
The UK government is in the process of reforming ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) through an "Earned Settlement" model. Under proposals consulted on in early 2026, the standard qualifying period could increase from 5 years to 10 years for most sponsored workers. Final rules have not yet been published, but applicants and long-term planners should monitor GOV.UK. The Graduate Route period does not count toward ILR — the clock starts from when you switch to a qualifying settlement route, such as Skilled Worker.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Nigerian students apply for the Graduate Route visa?
Yes. Nigerian nationality is not a barrier to the Graduate Route. Any international student who completes an eligible UK degree at a licensed higher education institution while on a valid Student visa can apply, regardless of nationality. You must apply from within the UK while your student visa is still valid.
Do I need a job offer for the Graduate Route visa?
No. This is one of the key advantages of the Graduate Route. You do not need a job offer, a sponsoring employer, or any specific salary level. You apply based on having completed your degree — then you use the visa period to find work and build your career.
How much does the Graduate Route visa cost in naira?
From 8 April 2026, the total cost for a bachelor's or master's graduate is £3,007 (£937 application fee + £2,070 Immigration Health Surcharge for 2 years). At an indicative rate of ₦2,050/£1, that is approximately ₦6.16 million. PhD graduates pay £4,042 (£937 + £3,105 IHS) — approximately ₦8.29 million. Always verify the live exchange rate.
Can I be self-employed or start a business on the Graduate Route visa?
Yes. Unlike the student visa, the Graduate Route permits self-employment, freelancing, running a business, and working at any skill level. This is a significant expansion of your work rights compared to the student visa.
Does the Graduate Route lead to UK permanent residency (ILR)?
Not directly. The Graduate Route is a temporary visa and does not count toward ILR. To move toward permanent residency, you must switch to a qualifying long-term route (typically Skilled Worker) before your Graduate visa expires. ILR is currently available after 5 years on most qualifying routes, though the government is consulting on extending this to 10 years for most migrants — check the latest rules at GOV.UK before planning.
What if my student visa expires before I apply for the Graduate Route?
If your student visa expires before you apply, you lose eligibility for the Graduate Route entirely. You cannot apply from outside the UK or after your permission has expired. This is the most common — and most avoidable — reason Nigerian graduates miss out on the Graduate Route. Apply before your student visa expires, giving yourself at least 4–6 weeks of buffer.
What is the processing time for the Graduate Route visa?
The Home Office aims to decide Graduate Route applications within 8 weeks. Many straightforward applications are decided faster. Priority service is not available for this route, so you cannot pay for faster processing. Apply early — do not wait until a few days before your student visa expires.
Can I bring my family (dependants) on the Graduate Route visa?
Yes, if your dependants (partner or children) are already in the UK as dependants on your student visa, they can apply for leave to remain as Graduate Route dependants. Each dependant pays the same £937 application fee plus the IHS at £1,035 per year. Note: only PhD and research-based postgraduate students could bring dependants on their original student visa (this restriction was introduced in 2024); master's and undergraduate students cannot bring new dependants.
Bottom Line
The Graduate Route visa is one of the UK's most valuable immigration tools for Nigerian graduates — two full years to live, work, freelance, or build a business in the UK, with no job offer required. The total cost from 8 April 2026 is approximately ₦6.16 million for a 2-year visa (application fee + IHS), paid entirely from within the UK.
The most important thing you can do right now, if you are currently studying in the UK, is understand the 31 December 2026 deadline. Apply before that date and you get 2 years. Apply after and you get 18 months. The visa length is determined by the date you submit your application — not when you graduated. Plan your timeline accordingly, and do not let your student visa expire before you apply.
